03Before every walk

Leather and hardware age with use. Check the buckle, D-ring and stitching before every walk. Stop using and replace the item as soon as you see cracking, deformation or loose stitching.

Not intended for tethering a dog that is left unattended.

Not a vehicle restraint. Securing a dog in a car requires a tested car safety-belt system; nothing sold here is designed or tested for that purpose.

Hides are legal by-products of food livestock. We do not sell CITES-listed species leather or real fur. Chromium VI is limited to ≤ 3 mg/kg and azo dyes to the REACH Annex XVII limits; metal fittings meet the REACH nickel release limit. Supplier declarations for the current batch are on file and can be requested by email.

Dyes and tanning agents are used in every leather article. Do not let a dog chew leather goods for extended periods.

06Care and natural variation

Check the stop rivet each time you check the buckle. Re-oil two or three times a year.

Grain, scars and shade vary from hide to hide, and the colour of a vegetable-tanned piece deepens with light and use. Two pieces ordered at different times will not match exactly. That is the material behaving normally, not a defect.

A martingale has a smaller control loop that shortens the main loop by a fixed amount. On this collar that amount is capped by a riveted stop: the loop closes to the set point and then stops. It cannot keep tightening.

The stop is set during assembly to the size you order and can be re-set by a saddler. Both loops are full-grain leather; the connecting rings are stainless steel.

This is the only slip-style collar we make, and the stop is the reason it exists. A collar that keeps closing with nothing to arrest it is not something we will ever put on this site.
